An Elite Club With an Amazing History…
Although this happened in the late 1960s, I believe the late Virgil Smith may have had the most famous hole-in-one at the course. He had a hole-in-one on the par 4 15th hole. (“A great shot.”) I was just a kid, but my parents were friends of the Smiths and they used to talk about it a lot. It would be great if he was recognized for this feat.
I spent part of my childhood in Orleans and this is where I learned to play golf. I have so many fond memories of Orleans and OCC. It was a great place to grow up and enjoy your childhood. I truly enjoy your website as it brings me back to a time of joy in my life. I hope to make it back to play another round there soon. The last time I played OCC was in the early 90’s.

Note: This is a true story and has been confirmed by several long time OCC members. At the time, the 15th hole was a little shorter than it is today. However, it still was a dog leg with a downhill slope to the green with plenty of trouble for errant shots. This is indeed an incredible story. Thank you Keith for adding this bit of history to this page.
Here’s more to the story . . .
Randy Smith is 99% sure his father’s playing partners who witnessed the event were Dick Dudley, Cubby Goulet and Larry Thompson; long time golfing buddies of Virgil. Randy still has the flag from the 15th green’s flagstick from this memorable day.
Pierce Holes One At Orleans
Another great story from the 1960’s shared by Jane Horton and Carol Boucher of their father Hugh Pierce. This newspaper article was recently found in their mother’s Ginger Pierce’s collection. June 6, 2018

Judy used her old Ping 3-Wood and she was the only one who didn‘t realize it was in the hole! The guys in front heard it hit the pin and then couldn’t see it anywhere, so they knew. Unbelievable because she has only been on that green once or twice ever.

Hole #8 ~ 7 Iron ~ White Tees 180 Yards
Witnessed by his Brother-in-Law Dave Perrault of Plainfield and Mark Smith.
It was Paul‘s first hole-in-one after 40 years of playing. Paul & Dave were relaxing after having celebrated Paul’s son’s wedding Sunday.
For Mark Smith, it was the second hole-in-one he witnessed in 13 days, when never having played with someone who had an ace in almost 60 years. Mark has 5 different caps he wears, but had on his Orleans CC hat both times. Quite a coincidence!

Albatross/Double Eagle ~ Par 4 in 1
Hole #17 ~ Driver ~ White Tees 285 Yards
Witnessed by Landon Carey via Facetime.
Garett‘s story: I was hitting from the white tees, I’m 19. I would say like 50% of the time I’m on the green on Hole 17. Almost always I have the distance, it just comes down to if it goes at the green or not. I initially thought I went over the green and was on the fringe in the back, but when I looked I couldn’t find my ball anywhere. That’s when I decided to check the cup and it was in the hole! I was playing a Chrome Tour 4. At the time, I was golfing alone, but was facetiming with my good friend Landon Carey who saw the whole thing from Tee to Green. I was recording the shot as there is potential and sure enough this time it somehow went in.

Is an Albatross rarer than a Hole-In-One?
"It would be better for your score to have an albatross - three under par on a hole, than a hole-in-one on a par-3. But if you are asking which is rarer, an albatross - either a hole-in-one on a par 4 hole or holing out one’s second shot on a par-5 - is much rarer than a hole-in-one on a par-3 hole." "The odds of scoring a hole in-one, or ace, is 12,000 to 1, while an albatross is six million to 1, according to golf experts."

Hole #13 ~ 90 Yards ~ Sand Wedge
Witnessed by Ron Arundell
The scores on the card indicate points.
The morning of July 5 was forecast to have rain. Ron Arundell and I were the only members of our regular early morning group to show up. Hitting from the forward tees (like the others in our age group), I won handily in front, but was faltering in the back. I teed it up high on 13 and sent a very high-arc sand wedge to the green. The berm meant we could not see the ball on the ground. As I approached the green and saw only one ball, I was careful to hang back just in case, ensuring that Ron would see the ball in the hole before I approached it. Ron held on to beat me on the back nine by a stroke, but we assumed that this ace, in our intricate quota scoring system devised and maintained by Don Putvain, gave me enough points to take both sides. Big winnings! $1 in front and $1 in back! I told Natalie that I would buy drinks for everyone in the bar: Ron and me. An inexpensive hole-in-one. And barely a sprinkle. Great fun, despite the (very) thin crowd. BTW, Ron scored a birdie on the same hole. Two guys took a total of three shots on that hole.

Brien Barlow
Charlie Scott 2-Man Best Ball
Hole #10 ~ 200 Yards
Bob Granfors Hole-In-One on #10 and the rarity of Hole-In-Ones reported on this hole have sparked a few memories. This new information now has us at six for the 10th Hole.
Larry Bona reported a 10th hole Hole-In-One by Al Turner in the 1980’s, which is now listed in the 1980’s section.
The 2nd is by Brien Barlow as reported by John Kelley, June 13, 2022. We added it here, since it is a great memory from the long standing Charlie Scott 2-Man Best Ball.
As John Kelly states - Congrats to Bob on the hole-in-one on the 10th hole. Brien Barlow got one on that hole probably 20 years ago. Same deal - his first swing of the day in the Charlie Scott.
I don’t have all the particulars on Brien’s hole-in-one. Unfortunately he’s passed away. Our whole gang was up for the Charlie Scott, and I was in the parking lot when he got his hole-in-one right out of the chute!
Anyway, I just wanted to pass on the fact that he got one, the same circumstances as Bob.
I didn’t get up to the tourney this year but many of my friends played, and of course we love it. I live in South Burlington now, but grew up in Derby Line. A lot of my family up there are members at Newport.
Regards, John Kelley

This Hole-In-One took place at the Charlie Scott Two-Man Best Ball. It was Bob’s 1st swing of the day as his foursome started their round on the 10th Hole.
Hole-In-One‘s on the 10th Hole are a rarity. We only have 3 other’s recorded on this hole: Robert Wood in 2010, Woodie Harper in 1996, and Tom Fotheringham in 1995.

Thank you Ryan for offering the story behind this memorable shot. "I happened to say "Excellent shot!" just as the ball left Adam’s club and soared through the air. The ball then landed just right of the hole, made a deep divot, and then took a sharp left to roll into the hole. It was bizarre but exiting. We told Adam that the tradition as we knew it was that he would need to go into the club house and buy a drink for everyone present. We finished the front nine and took a quick break to go into the bar. It was a warm day. And lo and behold the only one in the bar was the bartender and the four of us. Adam bought a drink for each of us. (We all agreed that he was doubly lucky that the bar was empty at that mid-day moment!)."

13th Hole ~ 75 Yards ~ Gap Wedge
Ron‘s Story: I usually use my sand wedge, but I had left that club at the Montpelier Elks CC at the beginning of the week. So I used my gap wedge and a soft flight compression orange ball so it would not hit the green and go over. I hit the ball nicely, but could not see it land. I thought it went into one of the bunkers. I walked up and looked in each bunker, no ball. I then went to look to see if it went beyond the green. I noticed a colored ball in the rough of the 10th fairway. I started to walk toward it when Bruce Moffit asked me if I were playing a pink ball because that ball was his wife’s. I said no I was playing an orange ball. I walked back toward the green on #13 thinking I had lost the ball out of bounds, but one last chance I looked in the hole and there it was. I YELLED TO BRUCE TO COME AND WITNESS IT. He and his wife came over and she took a pic. My 1st ever hole-in-one in 73 years was in the record books.

Based on the clipping from the Burlington Free Press, we were able to track down Pam Shover‘s ace with the help of the VSWGA’s Tournament Summary Archives. Pam Shover is no stranger to OCC, she often plays at our annual Monique Dudley Memorial and the Fall Ladies’ Best Ball.

3rd Hole ~ 5 Iron ~ 135 yards
Witnessed by Brian Kinsley, Chuck Dudley, & Terry Dudley
On Friday, August 26, 1994 Brian and Martha Kinsley were playing in the ‘Nine and Dine’ with Terry and Chuck Dudley. The format was a scramble. At the first tee, Chuck announced that the group should try to get birdies on every hole. They all jokingly agreed to his announcement, but thought it next to impossible.
As it turned out, the team did get birdies on 6 holes, parred 2, and Martha had a hole-in-one on Hole 3. Terry and Martha were both putting so well that the men each had to sink only one putt. Chuck was so excited with the team score; they shot a 28! Not realizing how well they had done, Chuck was clear in letting his team know what a special night it was. He deemed the evening “Our Divine Nine - The most incredible nine holes of golf we have ever witnessed… (much less to have participated in).”
As the group reminisced, Chuck was able to provide a blow-by-blow account of their nine holes of golf with the greatest of detail. Memories of the evening of August 26, 1994 will always be there with vivid recall—a very special time together!!

Back then Hole-In-One Insurance covered everyone’s drinks back at the clubhouse. That night there were two free drinks for everyone.
As reported in the Newport Daily Express Wednesday, August 31, 1994
At the Orleans Country Club on Friday, the par 3, 3rd hole yielded two hole-in-ones in less than an hour. The first ace was collected by Martha Kinsley who was playing in a foursome with her husband Brian and Chuck and Terry Dudley. A short while later Robert Delisle scored the second of the day on the same hole playing with Peter Bergmans and Derek Doran.
